The third Signature-grade pipe from Catterall Pipes, featuring an amazing grain display with only a few pinpricks here and there in the birdseye. This is a large pipe with some heft to it - definitely an armchair smoker - but the wood is absolutely beautiful and the carving of the bowl is, if I may say so, quite interesting.
I spent a good amount of time with this sitting on my bench before I got down to the final shaping, but it turned out to be well worth the wait. The piece of plateaux I received from my supplier had the grain running at 45-degrees to the cut sides, which presented a challenge given my usual method of bandsawing the reference sides to maximize grain direction.
Note that the signature stamping - a bit lighter than I would have liked - is on the left side of the black acrylic stem on this one, as I was reluctant to sacrifice any of the curves on the shank in order to get a flat enough spot for stamping purposes.
